Why isn't lycra admissible? Do they call it something else in that stupid dictionary?
12:59 am
hokie carla
I'm struggling to stay awake for this US Open tennis match s
1:00 am
hokie carla
Lycra is a brand name for spandex
1:00 am
MetFan
According to Best words, it's admissible in Scrabble - and THEY don't allow brand names
1:01 am
hokie carla
well, I tried it here earlier in case it's like xerox and entered into common noun territory, but it is indeed a brand name of spandex.
1:02 am
hokie carla
according to merriam-webster's scrabble dictionary it is NOT playable
1:04 am
MetFan
I'm sorry - I just checked MW myself and it is indeed a trademark

i have a similat problem quite often. I know Americans laugh at us Brits for using hoover as a term for almost any kind of cleaner but we also us
1:19 am
Deeha
sorry - use the word strim. It is a gardening verb! But I'm told it is a trade name in US
1:26 am
hokie carla
I've only ever seen it here from canadians. I believe it's a portmanteau for string trimmer? we call a weedeater.
1:27 am
hokie carla
but hoover is definitely a brand name. first time I heard my scottish friends say something about hoovering the floor, I was like, what?
1:32 am
Deeha
even if we have a Dyson we still hoover the floor!!
1:36 am
hokie carla
not unlike US southerners calling all soft drinks cokes
1:36 am
hokie carla
are Dysons as expensive there compared to other vacuums as they are here?
1:37 am
MetFan
We sometimes talk about hoovering a floor here in the USA
1:38 am

Now they're only available on subscription to BBC.com - but I have DVDs of my faves

Wheelie bin makes sense.

Did you ever get one of my favourites - now about 40 years old but just as funny- Porridge?
1:46 am
MetFan
Never heard of it. I do go as far back as Are You Being Served and As Time Goes By. My other fave is 'Allo 'Allo,
1:50 am
MetFan
Looked it up - I never saw it, but I recognize some of the names of people who were in it, like Christopher Biggins and Brian Glover
1:50 am
Deeha
If ever you spot it watch it!! Itstars the brilliant Ronnie Barker of the Two Ronnies
1:53 am

I've just been to Amazon and ordered the complete series. I'll let you know when I've got it, and what I think of it. It sounds funny. And it's 50 years old.
1:54 am
MetFan
I should have it in about 10 days
1:54 am
Deeha
Forgot I was that old!! I think you will enjoy it. I hope so anyway!
1:55 am
MetFan
I've watched Mollie Sugden in Come Back Mrs Noah - if I liked that, I'm sure I'll like Porridge

Just read your bio. I love Ella Fitzgerald, I saw her in the 60s appearing in a one off live performance in a local cinema. Latterly it was changed to a music venue called The Brixton Academy. I was lucky to live in a time when the 'greats' came to London. I saw Frankie Laine!!Frank Sinatra Sammy Davis Junior

Trifioso
hi friends.
12:50 pm
Trifioso
needed a sewing break, so here I am
12:50 pm
hurshy
what are you sewing
12:51 pm
Trifioso
this morning I made the silliest pair of pants you have ever seen - I LOVE them! Made out of a pair of very ugly stripey retro towels from a thrift store. They are for my son in law, who surfs.
12:51 pm
Trifioso
I am thinking of opening an etsy shop, and seeing what it might be like to sew for a living
12:52 pm
hurshy
the only thing about etsy is sometimes it cuts a seller off without warning, saying you violated their policies. but they don't even tell you which policy you supposedly violated or give you a second chance or let you appeal it or anything
12:52 pm
Trifioso
no way! I had not heard that
12:52 pm
BzznBea
I've got a fun twin sheet I'm thinking about making a pair of pants from.
12:52 pm
hurshy
yeah it happened to my sister
12:53 pm
Trifioso
I am taking a course next week on "how to etsy" I hope they address this!
12:53 pm
hurshy
luckily she wasn't relying on it as her main source of income but it was still very frustrating and upsetting for her
12:53 pm
Gobias
I wish etsy would get rid of all the people who don't actually make the things they sell... like the way it used to be
12:53 pm
Trifioso
Bzzn, you should! I made a lovely skirt out of an old sheet with a super pretty hem desing
12:53 pm
hurshy
amen to that Gobias
12:53 pm
Trifioso
they are VERY much cracking down on that, gobias
12:54 pm
Gobias
good to know... it used to be so cool!

I hate being unemployed, and cannot find a job to sae my actual life. Too young to retire, too old to hire

its fine, we all do it

I left some scones in the PB last time I was there

I would NEVER serve anything less than a perfect scone, Hurshy! You WOUND me!
12:56 pm
BzznBea
I'm sorry, trif. The job market is so crazy now.
12:57 pm
BzznBea
Weren't you doing long term subbing?
12:57 pm
Trifioso
ooooh just found my favorite Red Dwarf word....enable doesn't take it, but it always makes me giggle
12:57 pm
hurshy
and the job market is always worse than the numers show, because the numbers don't reflect the type of job and many people have one where they get scheduled haphazardly last minute so they can't plan for child care and stuff and it makes their lives a mess, AND it doesn't count people who have been unemployed for over a certain length of time either - just assumes they have given up
12:58 pm
Trifioso
Good memory, buzzn! yes, indeed I was. Last year I worked in THREE different schools teaching way too make things. I am exhausted at academic year's end. This fall I applied for everything I could, but was not hired anywhere
12:59 pm
hurshy
as if being unemployed for so long that you've given up would mean you should not count as unemployed anymore...
1:00 pm
hurshy
so ridiculous
1:01 pm
Trifioso
I only have nine more weeks of unemployment paymens. After that, I don't know what
1:01 pm
hurshy
wishing you luck trif - the sewing sounds promising maybe
1:02 pm
Trifioso
maybe. There are definitely peole out there doing very well! I saw a women posting about how she makes coats out of old quilts. She makes and sells 10 a week, at an average of $225 a pop. You can do the math there
1:03 pm
hurshy
ooh got a 7/8 combo
1:04 pm

could someone please accidentally type in the lone e in the fourth column? Much appreciated

4:21 pm

4:21 pm

that lo8 is all by itself (hint, hint, for anyone else needing it) ;)
4:22 pm
hurshy
is THAT any relation to the ra6 & 7
4:25 pm
rbud
same first 5 letters, not sure about related, checking, as I'm curious
4:26 pm

Yes, they're related. The ra 8 means resembling or having the form of the ra 6.
