The key is to do the physio and get an ice machine and convince his docter to have it put on immediately after surgery. I woke up with mine on in the recovery room, kept it going 24/7 for the first week and had no swelling at all

okay. have used the "manual "version when i was working. a machine which automatically changes the water for ice cold seems like a great idea.

It comes with a pad that you wrap around the knee or hip, depending on which you order, and the cold water circulates through it.

yes nan. they were used mainly for knee surgery patients. but it relied on the nurses to be diligent in draining the cuff, and then refilling it with iced water.

no - you don't need to drain a cuff - just refill the machine every 12 hours, plug it in and the cold water is continually pumped through the cuff. After the first week, I used it when I slept at night or if the knee started to swell during the day.

when i had my knee replacement done, i used cold gel packs. they were fitted in a wrap around cuff, and you replaced the warm one with a cold one from the freezer.
