When I was young we had a house with a central wood fired furnace that was the main source of heat. My da used to wait until there was a scrim of ice on the toilet bowl water before firing up for the season, because he knew once it started it would be going non-stop until spring. Average winter used to use up seven bush cord of hardwood and two face cord of softwood.

Even now, when heat is as simple as turing it on with a thermostat mounted on the wall, the habit is ingrained, and I wait until the bitter end before turning the heat on. :)
