heat removes the ink so quilters would mark the fabric and then iron it off. but it leaves a faint residue that can be visible and cold temps bring it all back.

btw, the pen is called Frixion and the selling point is the top has a plasticy thing that you use like an eraser, so the heat caused by friction makes it disappear.
