this game taught me that haint as in 'haint blue' is very much local to this part of the Appalachian dialect continuum. Probably from Northern England or Scots I'd guess.
12:34 am
dcseain
haint means spirit
12:35 am
sprite
morning babblers, hi seain! Linked to haunted maybe?
12:37 am
dcseain
apparently, yes.
12:38 am
sprite
ks killed
12:38 am
dcseain
there's a set of colors we call West Virginia colors: Paint the house a brick red and yellow, with haint blue around the windows and doors and the underside of porch roofs, and the floors of the porches to keep spirits out.
12:39 am
dcseain
haint blue is a sort of bright, but deeper shade, of sky blue.
12:39 am
sprite
ah nice. I know that painting blue around windows and doors helps to keep flies out, didn't know about spirits
12:40 am
dcseain
huh. I had no clue about the flies being repelled by that.
12:40 am
dcseain
that's useful to know.
12:41 am
dcseain
we tend toward full screens here to prevent that
12:42 am
sprite
I think the practice is older than the existence of screens, tbh.
12:42 am
dcseain
probably.
12:45 am
dcseain
only just found an8. As I'm allergic to it. Upside, I knew that suffix would prove useful.
12:46 am
sprite
I keep wanting to make ananas
12:47 am
jeanne314
Oh, I see Sprite went on a murder spree against the Ks again! I'm lacking one.
12:47 am
dcseain
pineapples or bananas?
12:47 am
sprite
gooooo jeanne!
12:47 am
sprite
bananas minus b equals pineapple
12:48 am
dcseain
::nods:: ananas means one or the other through parts of Latin America
12:48 am
jeanne314
Gonna get there! Then time for bed. I've got a rare morning meeting to wake up for. I dislike things that get in the way of Babble, like having to go to bed and that sort of thing.
12:49 am
sprite
ikr? I hate it when life or work gets between babble and me. So inconsiderate.
12:50 am
jeanne314
absolutely concur. My fault for volunteering though. Ah, it's only once a month. Small sacrifice.
12:51 am
sprite
I am fully willing to volunteer. I work for the telephone sos line and I help at school. But I refuse to do meetings. I hated them while working for pay. Not gonna torture myself anymore with them now that I no longer have to.
12:54 am
jeanne314
I'm such a ditz! Thanks to my complaining just now, I thought I'd check my e-mail....Meeting has been changed to FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!! I can play longer!!!!!!!!
12:54 am
sprite
oh wow! That is good news :)
12:55 am
sprite
ah lovely, the laughing fence is back
12:58 am
jeanne314
I volunteered for two things: This monthly meeting is our county's Veteran's office, and I'm a commissioner. Twenty years military (a whole lifetime ago, but hey, I still love my brothers and sisters in uniform!); the second was a care home for developmentally and/or psychologically disabled folks, until the state closed it down and moved everyone to other homes in the state. I had a stepbrother who used to live in such a facility, so I did that work as a tribute to him (he was also a veteran as well, so it served double-duty).
12:59 am
dcseain
what a mitzvah, Jeanne!
12:59 am
sprite
you rock!
1:00 am
dcseain
properly declined in yiddish, yes.
1:00 am
jeanne314
Ho, ho! What is a laughing fence? And I think I'm about to learn a new word! Gotta go look it up.....
1:00 am
mab
yes, so great. Thanks for your service.
1:00 am
mab
hebrew, isn't is dc?
1:01 am
sprite
it is a babblet, it is in my profile list. A border marker, scots I believe. It sounds like a laugh.
1:01 am
dcseain
-ot for female, yes, Hebrew.
1:01 am
dcseain
my Hebrew is weak
1:02 am
mab
mine too. I'm thinking yiddish would be something like mitzvos
1:03 am
mab
naturally, the pl would be mitzvoses. ha ha ha ha, so annoying i am.
1:03 am
sprite
I am familiar with the spelling mitzvah or mitzwah, not with the other ones.
1:03 am
dcseain
not annoying :)
1:03 am
dcseain
I love learning.
1:04 am
jeanne314
Duh. I should have guessed. I love Yiddish, and I wish I knew more of it! For some reason my family's older members used A LOT of the common ones. We're not Jewish. But I have a few private guesses as to why (German emigres, some members from "further East," this from an ancient scrap of family papers. Always wondered if they were Russian Jews fleeing from pogroms or something. Most of the names kind of go with somewhat typical German Jewish names. Not one shred of proof. Hubby wants me to take a DNA test. Does it count if two Jewish oldsters said I had a Jewish soul, LOL!
1:04 am
sprite
not annoying at all. We are all language lovers here, it is interesting!
1:05 am
dcseain
I learned several years ago that the original form of my surname was Gutreich -- the left Friesland and moved to England.
1:05 am
jeanne314
My brother learned Hebrew. I will have to ask him about noun and verb construction! I never thought to ask him.
1:05 am
sprite
there is a lot of yiddish in the the dutch language. And I have read the Faye Kellerman series which gives an interesting peek into the jewish faith and culture.
1:05 am
dcseain
and my line then onto what would be the US
1:05 am
mab
fascinating jeanne. i think you have to be close to something. I'd be eager to check dna.
1:05 am
dcseain
neat, sprite.
1:06 am
jeanne314
Family histories are interesting. As one friend always says, we're all a little Jewish somewhere along the line.
1:06 am
gingentle
oy gevalt. I was made an honorary jew, as I was a chef for a jewish owned catering company and it was deemed I had suffered enough.
1:06 am
mab
i had no idea, sprite. so interesting.
1:07 am
dcseain
I did the dna thing. My y-chromosome is of the Northern European type, common in Iceland, British Isles, Netherlands, NW Germany and Scandinavia.
1:07 am
gingentle
definitely have dna done
1:07 am
mab
and thank you for your service, gingentle!
1:07 am
sprite
that is so cool, seain! Friesland is part of the Netherlands, we are practically family now (my grandfather was a full Fries, and I got some from the other side of the family as well, so I am more than 1/4 Fries myself. Maiden name is Elsinga)
1:07 am
dcseain
I learnt oy vey fer schimmel from a great-grandfather.
1:07 am
jeanne314
All of you have fun and interesting bits! I'm getting more encouraged to do the DNA testing. Anybody got a recommendation for the best one or type?
1:07 am
sprite
that is awesome, gingentle
1:08 am
dcseain
neat, sprite! My ancestors came from a Sepherad community there.
1:08 am
gingentle
i was Chef for nearly 20 years. I can cook kosher like nobody's biz and can stand up to the VAAD without waivering!

I love it when the chat becomes so engrossing I forget to babble!
1:09 am
dcseain
cool, gingentle
1:09 am
mab
and what does that mean, seain? the schimmel part?
1:10 am
dcseain
I think it means shit
1:10 am
sprite
schimmel can mean mold, or a white horse
1:10 am
dcseain
my mom's family use very 'colorful' language.
1:10 am
dcseain
oh, he was from NW Germany, so that could be.
1:11 am
jeanne314
gingentle, I rather feel that being named an honorary Jew is quite something to feel really good about -- you have been accepted as a loving soul! A Jewish friend from Russia said I reminded her of her childhood best friend. Turns out we have the same surname! And my actual surname is NOT Jewish!!! But it was somewhat common (probably more like not highly unusual) for Jews living around Odessa.
1:11 am
jeanne314
we were both just gobsmacked.
1:11 am
gingentle
one of the very traditional jewish things i perfected was answering a question with a question
1:12 am
gingentle
cool Jeanne
1:12 am
sprite
I am fascinated by this chat. And I agree, jeanne, seems to me to be a huge honour to be considered a honorary Jew.
1:12 am
jeanne314
Oh, lord, you guys, keep dishing out the Yiddish! I may just lurk for awhile (I always feel bad when I glut up the chog!)
1:12 am
dcseain
I met a distant cousin in High school -- her surname was my mother's maiden name.
1:12 am
mab
i do like 'nu?'
1:12 am
dcseain
nu? is so useful!
1:13 am
jeanne314
Nu, chto?
1:13 am
sprite
lol gingentle... that is something I still want to learn. I am so freakin' conditioned to answer every question. I am nearing 60 and finally starting to learn not to do that.
1:13 am
sprite
nu, and oy vey... so very very useful
1:13 am
mab
i tend to think of old men with the nu, but that's just my experience.
1:14 am
gingentle
Sprite, too much information you should not give..
1:14 am
gingentle
there are levels of oy.
1:14 am
dcseain
I found a na4/5 that my brain wants to be a Spanish verb in two forms.
1:14 am
dcseain
there are levels of oy, indeed!
1:14 am
sprite
so very true, gingentle.
1:14 am
gingentle

1:15 am
jeanne314
And for the rest of the lurkers, this whole Jewish/Yiddish convo has nothing to do (pro or con) with the current Israeli/Palestinian issue. Just the age-old connections of history and language. Just don't want anyone to find offense to take.
1:15 am
dcseain
agreed with jeanne
1:15 am
sprite
oh... indeed. Not related to that at all. Not politically coloured, just language oriented chat.
1:16 am
gingentle
the yiddish language is a mashup of hebraic and german
1:16 am
mab
a chasm between jewish and feelings about what's going on.
1:16 am
dcseain
that there is indeed, mab
1:16 am
jeanne314
and I think that's sort of how my family came by it...plus, lots of Amish in my area.
1:17 am
dcseain
lots of Amish near my dad's family in central Ohio too.
1:17 am
mab
room for most opinions for me. well, actually...
1:17 am

I visit Pennsylvania Amish country now and again.
1:17 am

"Love one another."
1:17 am
dcseain
we do our best here among us we do!
1:18 am
gingentle
this reminds me to place an order with an Amish store in Illinois for green tomato relish
1:18 am
dcseain
I miss being able to buy green tomatoes in the store to make fried green tomatoes with.
1:18 am
jeanne314
dcseain -- Okay. You're close to home. I'm from Muskingum County. Parents from Oil City, Pennsylvania.
1:18 am
mab
i'll likely always stand with israel, but not it's actions and certainly not bb.
1:18 am
dcseain
I love the corneal covered fried green tomatoes with a red pepper coulis.
1:19 am
gingentle
you can find them at some farmers markets
1:19 am

bb the politician is a monster. I have much respect for him the academic, but ugh the politician.
1:19 am

1:20 am
jeanne314
dcseain -- did you see my origin location from 1:18?????
1:20 am
gingentle
dc, I am disabled and can never motivate myself to go to farmers mkt. I hate crowds
1:20 am
sprite
politics and politicians.... NOT my cup of tea. Too many lies. Too much abuse of power.
1:21 am
dcseain
oh! my dad's people live in Licking County and Maskingum County.
1:21 am
gingentle
sprite, esp when the politicans are orange
1:21 am

1:22 am

This is pretty darn neat. Glad to speak with you. I've seen you on here for, like, forever! This is the most I've EVER posted! I do love this community, though.

you need to stop apologising for joining the chat, jeanne, lol, you are part of it and a lovely part too
1:26 am
mab
me too, jeanne. all of what you just said.
1:26 am
dcseain
I'm always glad to see people in this chat. Solid community.
1:26 am
jeanne314
Ah, thank you all. But I'm sure some just want to see clues and stats and hate leafing through the "non-essential" chatter. Hence, the apology.
1:27 am
sprite
it is. Great people, lovely minds.
1:27 am
dcseain
we used to chat with each other a lot. It's nice when that happens.
1:27 am
sprite
yeah well, some of us would love to babble without seeing all the clues. Can't please us all.
1:27 am
jeanne314

yes, wild times with lola and i forget the one who wooed her.
1:28 am

I remember the seres of flip and flop then some chatting at the start. Loved that.
1:28 am
mab
well wild may be overstating. fun.
1:28 am
sprite
it always amazes me when posting un-asked-for clues is more more important than answering a friendly greeting. Am so happy when the chat is back to its old fun standards :)
1:29 am
dcseain
hear, hear, sprite!
1:32 am
dcseain
oh, that ta7 was unexpected
1:32 am

a lonnnnng time ago I used to play just before the flip. It was fun clueing to help people race to fireworks before the flip, then start the new grid together without giving away the biggies. But nowadays, I wa4 till a little later and try to ignore the clues.'
1:32 am
mab
lola's beau will come to me at 5-ish a.m.
