I don't know why, mab, but this episode just popped into my head...sort of related, I guess: Years ago I was watching TV and a black man was speaking about greed of corporations or some such, and he happened to use the word "niggardly." Dear heavens, the uproar over his use of that word was enormous. It's now come to the point where people have to dumb their speech down or they risk being misunderstood. And then there is the case of perfectly good words that have corrupted meanings, such as "jew." Keep up the good fight, foks, and keep the vocabulary elevated.

absolutely. he is the loveliest of men. and his anaesthetist i have worked with before. he took great care of me. he organised a CPAP for under the oxygen mask. was very careful to make sure i was physically comfortable.
